Garlic in Cattaraugus County
Who doesn’t love garlic?! Although most commonly associated with Mediterranean cuisine, this flavorful member of the Allium family also plays a huge role in Asian, Middle-Eastern, Latin American and, of course, American cuisine. Those of us who live in Cattaraugus County find ourselves in good company—growers, chefs, artisans, and vendors with garlic and garlic-themed products can be found throughout the county.

Area Farmers’ Markets
May - October
The nutrient rich soil of the Enchanted Mountains is ideal for growing many different kinds of fruits and vegetables, including garlic. Looking for some fresh, locally grown garlic? Five area markets sell to the public during the growing season: REAP Olean, Southern Tier (Olean), Salamanca, South Dayton, and Franklinville. Community-Supported Agriculture
Canticle Farm & Native Offerings Farm
Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms ask customers (shareholders) to pay up front for a season-long supply of vegetables, fruit, and/or meat that varies weekly. Not only is this is a great way to support local agriculture, it also gives shareholders many opportunities to learn—they can help plant, maintain, and harvest crops alongside their farmers (above). 2017 Cuba Garlic Festival
September 16 + 17, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM EDT
Empire City Farms, 105 South St., Cuba, NY
This festival is just a short drive from Cattaraugus County, in neighboring Allegany County. With over 100 local vendors, garlic growers, cooking demonstrations, live music, and entertainment for the kids, the Cuba Garlic Festival is a great place to spend the last weekend of summer. You can buy local garlic from area farmers, learn how to braid it for proper storage, then pick up some great tips during one of the cooking demos.
